Lecturer in Church Music

3ELET: Maria Monteiro

Originally from Recife, Brazil, Maria serves as Lecturer in Church Music at Baylor University and as music director at Primera Iglesia bautista Mexicana (First Mexican Baptist Church), in San Antonio. Before joining the Baylor faculty, she taught for seventeen years at Baptist University of the Américas, also in San Antonio. Maria finds her work in academia essential to her understanding of important issues in the field of church music—past and present, local and global—and to her ability to educate and serve her fellow church members and students in the consequential work of music ministry. Maria has just defended her Ph.D. dissertation and in August 2021, she will become the fifth graduate of Baylor’s Church Music doctoral program.
